Child Sexual AbuseChild sexual abuse may not necessarily be violent in nature and most often the abuser is known to the child. The abuser is very often someone in a trusted social relationship, who appears to be an ordinary, respectable, trustworthy and well-liked person. Abusers come from every social and economic background Society needs to recognise that the use of physical force is rarely necessary when trying to engage a child in sexual activity. This is due to the fact that children are very trusting and dependent upon adults. From the time they are very small, children are taught not to question authority, which leaves them believing that adults are always right and they must do what adults have asked them to do. Every abuser knows this and takes advantage of the vulnerability of children in order to gain control over them. This is a direct violation of that child's right to normal, healthy, happy and trusting relationships. That is why it is so important that we must open our eyes to the gravity of this problem that plagues our planet. Child sexual abuse is a pattern of behaviour; it is never a single event, but rather a course of conduct designed to reduce a child's self concept to the point where she/he considers her/himself unworthy of unconditional love, respect, friendship and unworthy of the basic birthright of all children to be loved and protected. These feelings often last into adulthood. Survivors of child sexual abuse carry within themselves the power to heal; healing means learning how to trust again, learning self-respect, earning the respect of others and making that respect, the absolute minimum requirement of all intimate relationships.
